Many couples who learn the true nature of the Marriage License get married without one. It is defined, by law, as a legal permit to enter into an inter-racial marriage (miscengenation). It is optional, but no clerk at the courthouse will tell you so.
Marriage is a God-given right. It predates the founding of this Republic. Any couple can enter into a binding marriage by taking part in a religious ceremony and having the minister (or pastor, shaman, guru, etc.) as well as two witnesses sign a document attesting such a ceremony took place. See a sample Marriage Contract which can be used in all 50 states.
Of course, most couples, knowingly or unknowingly, enter into a union not based on rights, but based on legislative (statutory) privilege. They obtain a Marriage License, have a judge or religious official perform the ceremony, he signs the document and returns it to the state. But anything the state giveth, the state can taketh away and everything the state giveth comes with multiple strings attached.
Since some states are going to extend the privilege of marriage by use of a Marriage License to homosexuals, Christians now have even more reason to forego a Marriage License, and also deny the state the revenue it would otherwise have received.
