The Strawberry Pitaya
is native just west of our area, but thrives here in raised beds of "coarse
concrete sand", a locally-available building material. Clumps can,
over many years, grow to over 3' across and consist of dozens of stems.
The purple blooms appear in April and May, followed by edible fruits.
Please, only the seedy pulp is edible, the spiny outside is not. Grows
best in full sun, in a location with good drainage. Requires no supplemental
irrigation once established.
