A
choice form we grow for its delicious sprouts in spring. Our 10-year-old
grove is over 50 feet across - we have allowed it to spread that far.
It differs from the typical Phyllostachys vivax in that it forms
a few asymmetrically compressed internodes when drought-stressed.
The tallest shoots will grow to over 50' high in this area (70' high with
greater rainfall and deeper soils). Children who seldom watch television
will spend hours engaged in highly imaginative play in one of these groves.
Fertilize with 15-5-10 lawn food (please, no weed and feed) in January,
May and September. Grows best in full sun to half-day sun and needs
a deep soaking every two weeks during a dry summer once established.
(Feed with 7 to 10 Agriform
21-gram,
2-year fertilizer tablets at the bottom of the hole at planting time.) |
