Begonias
have a reputation for being delicate. This one is tough! It
grows in full sun to half-day sun and is reliably root-hardy to below 10º
F. The numerous white flowers are borne atop 18 inch stems clothed
with glossy leaves. This clone, A1AG 286, was collected by a horticultural
expedition at its stop # 53 in Argentina, Catamarca Province, south of
the city of Tucuman, on the road to La Rioja, at 2433' elevation, S 28
03.48, W 65 36.50. Its habitat is a very dry area of low desert in
the rain shadow of the Andes. However, this specimen was found growing
in dense moist shade by a creek filled with lush vegetation, including
ferns and Hippeastrum (Amaryllis). Looks best if given a deep watering
every week during a dry summer.
