This
species and the following one, are the parents of the Hybrid Coral Bean,
Erythrina
X bidwillii. Though native to Brazil, it grows very well in our
area, up to 16 feet high and wide (if never pruned). I prune mine
only in late February to remove branches damaged by hard freezes.
Others prefer to cut them to the ground at the end of winter. Either
way, they flower profusely when it's hot. Grows in full sun to half-day
sun, in a location with good drainage. Requires no supplemental irrigation
once established.
(Feed with 5 to 7 Agriform
21-gram,
2-year fertilizer tablets at the bottom of the hole at planting time.) |
