While
Mountain Sage is one of the best fall-blooming salvias for central Texas,
it can also flower in spring after a winter with few freezes. The
cultivated clones from the Chisos Mountains in the Big Bend area of Texas
are cold-hardier, but forms collected in high elevation sites just southeast
of Saltillo (in northeast Mexico) are showier. This woody sage can grow
4' to 8' tall, and needs perfect drainage plus afternoon shade. Cultivars
and selections include: Hidalgo, Jame, 'Mount Emory' & 'Warnock's Choice'.
And please, water this hummingbird plant only if wilted (usually needs
a deep watering every two weeks during a dry summer).
