A
showy primary hybrid of
Hippeastrum aulicum var. stenopetalum and
H.
traubii forma doraniae. Unlike the amaryllis grown locally in
many old gardens, the spring-blooming
H. X johnsonii, this one bears
reddish-rose trumpets from late-spring to mid-summer. The plants
remain less than 16" high and soon form large clumps of narrow leaves with
red undersides. It is one of my favorite companion plants for Cherry
Sage (Salvia) and its relatives. Grows in full sun to half-day
sun in a location with good drainage. Looks best if given a deep
watering every two weeks during a dry summer.
