This
tropical vine, native to Costa Rica, is almost like Jack's Bean Stalk.
The main one in my back yard climbs to the top of a 30' tree each growing
season and bears 2" blue flowers in late summer and fall. Carefully
remove the frozen (and prickly) stems during the winter and stand back
next spring when it re-emerges from the mulch. Grows in full sun
to half-day sun. It requires a tree or trellis to climb - the prickly,
pinnate leaves help it cling to bark. Looks best if given a deep
watering every two weeks during a dry summer.
